Who is a private COVID-19 jab for?

The NHS offers free COVID-19 vaccination to a defined group of people each season. That list is narrower than many people expect, which leaves a lot of healthy adults in Buckfastleigh and the surrounding area without an NHS route to a booster. A private vaccination is for anyone who falls outside the NHS criteria but still wants the protection, including people who:

• are under 75 and otherwise healthy, so do not qualify on the NHS this season
• live with or regularly care for someone who is vulnerable or immunosuppressed
• work in a public-facing role and want to reduce time off over the winter
• are travelling, or have a wedding, holiday or family event they cannot afford to miss
• simply want the reassurance of being up to date before winter sets in

It is always worth checking before you pay. We also deliver NHS COVID-19 and flu vaccinations here in Buckfastleigh to everyone who qualifies, completely free of charge. For the current season you can generally get a free NHS COVID-19 vaccination if you:

• are aged 75 or over
• are aged 6 months to 74 years and have a weakened immune system because of a health condition or treatment
• live in a care home for older adults

Eligibility is set nationally and reviewed every season, so the quickest way to be certain is the NHS booking service — and if you qualify, you can book your free appointment with us right there.

What happens at your appointment

The whole visit usually takes around fifteen minutes.

• A short suitability check. Our pharmacist runs through your health, your medicines and your vaccination history, and answers anything you want to ask before going ahead.
• The vaccination itself. Given in the upper arm, in our private consultation room — not over the counter.
• Aftercare and a record. You will be given clear aftercare advice and a record of the vaccination before you leave.

A sore arm for a day or two is the most common after-effect. Some people feel tired or achy for a day; serious reactions are rare, and our pharmacist will talk you through what to look out for.

Can I have my flu jab at the same time?

Often yes. We offer private flu vaccinations at £24.99 alongside NHS flu jabs for everyone eligible. If you would like both done in one visit, say so when you ring and we will book the appointment accordingly. Full details of both are on our flu and COVID-19 vaccination page.
